Review: "Boruto - Naruto the Movie" in German Dub - top or flop?

Of course, I've watched Boruto - Naruto the Movie (2015) in Japanese Dub before rewatching it in German Dub.

Everytime when I've watched an anime movie or anime series in Japanese Dub and when I had been excited about it, I rewatch it in German Dub. Always, it is on par with the Japanese Dub. Mostly, my reactions are like "Wow, it was a very spectale"; "Wow, it can rival the Japanese Dub"; "You cannot complain about it" etc. But in this case, my reactions are more different because the German version of Boruto - Naruto the Movie has some ominous inconsistencies which ain't to be taken lightly.

In the following, I'm going to give my review about the German Dub from "Boruto - Naruto the Movie" right know:

1. Mistranslations

Konohamaru uses the Shadow Possession Jutsu by using the Ninja Tech

1.1. In that scene, Konohamaru uses the Shadow Possession Jutsu via Ninja Tech and call it a "forbidden Jutsu" in the German Dub (instead of Secret Jutsu). The thing is:

• Secret Jutsu (秘伝術 , Hiden Jutsu) is the term for Jutsu which are learned only within an entire clan (e.g. the Shadow techniques by the Nara-Clan; the Mind Transfer Techniques from the Yamanaka-Clan; the insect techniques from the Aburame-Clan) - not to be confused with Kekkei Genkai which are passed down GENETICALLY within specific clans.

•  "forbidden Jutsu" (禁術 , Kinjutsu) is that kind of techniques which are forbidden because they consume too much chakra (e.g. 1000 Shadow Clone Jutsu) or offend against nature laws (e.g. Summoning Jutsu: Reanimation or Transference Ritual).

So, the terms "forbidden Jutsu" and "secret Jutsu" have been - accidentally - exchanged in this movie's German Dub.

1.2. Saying "Water HIDEOUT" instead correctly "Water Style" or "Water Release". The thing is: the Japanese term 遁 (pronouncing: "ton") means "release" and it seems there is another term which sound phonetically like it but means "hideout". And in the German dub, they misinterpreted this term and this is the reason why they sometimes say (everytime when a element jutsu is used) "hideout" instead "released" or "style". An epic fail, isn't it?

2. Voice actor cast
Some voices of the new characters are not close enough:

• Sarada Uchiha - sounds more like a boy like a girl
• Shikadai Nara - not like in the Japanese Dub
• Inojin Yamanaka - not like in the Japanese Dub too
• Konohamaru Sarutobi (as adult) - okay but he sounds like too much like a teeanger instead like a young adult
• Kinshiki Ōtsutsuki - a deeper voice would be better for him
• Mitsuki - good but he doesn't sound like in the Japanese Dub

But otherwise, the voices of Boruto Uzumaki, Himawari Uzumaki, Katasuke Tōno (the inventor of the Ninja Techs) and Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki are very good. I'm impressed. Nailed it.

In any case, you have to be careful when you hire voice actors for a dub because the voices must fit to the characters for saving the dub's authenticity. And the german voice actors normally do a very good work but in "Boruto - Naruto the Movie", they were not that exciting for their standards.

But the German voice actors have done their best in this movie and I appreciate their work, so I don't deny their effort, expertise or anything else. But if they dub the anime series Boruto - Naruto Next Generation in German, some of the new characters' voice actors must be switched and they should be careful that almost no ominous mistranslations or anything else appears during dubbing.

Conclusion: I would rate the German Dub of Boruto - Naruto the Movie with 3.5 of 5 stars. This movie's German Dub cannot rival either the Japanese Dub or the English Dub. But despite this, the German Dub was kinda successful and I can recommend it - just due to Boruto's German voice and for the reason that the old characters' voices have been maintained.
