What if...: Mewtwo hadn't erased the memories from Ash and Co. in the movie "Mewtwo Strikes Back"?

The Pokémon The Movie - Mewtwo Strikes Back (released in Japan 1998, in the US 1999 and in Germany 2000) has been one of my absolute favorite movies since my childhood and I still love it. Not only because Mewtwo is my absolute favorite Pokémon but also due to the profound plot.
I was excited about the 3D-CGI-remake Mewtwo Strikes Back EVOLUTION (released in Japan 2019 and in the Overseas 2020) as well. A dualism between nostalgia and modernity.

At any rate, at the end of the movie, Mewtwo erases the memories of Ash, his friends and the other participants of the events occurred in the movie, for the reason it would be better for them, in Mewtwo's opinion. Thus, because the Pokémon movies belongs to the main anime's canon (except for the movies Pokémon the Movie - I Choose You, Pokémon the Movie - The Power in Us and the upcoming movie Pokémon the Movie - Coco), the justified questions is what if Mewtwo hadn't done so. How the plot would have proceeded?

With that said, this article's initial question is: Would it have had any impact of the anime's story line? Or would the story line be the same?

Without further ado, let's go:

The sequel Mewtwo Return. Or the literal
translation from the Japanese title:
MEWTWO SAGA - Mewtwo! I am here.

1. Indeed, Ash and his friends would have gained more wisdom that they had before and had the honor to know that every Pokémon, no matter if real or cloned, are respectively perfect in the way they are. Even Team Rocket would have drawn lesson from it despite having appeared in the background.
Furthermore, it would be interesting for Professor Oak either hearing about Mew, Mewtwo and the Clone Pokémon because he would have many things to state about the related things.

One way or another, Giovanni, the boss of Team Rocket, would leave no remedy catching Mewtwo and bringing it under his control. Principally the same like the events of the sequel Pokémon - Mewtwo Returns (released in Japan 2000, in the US 2001 and in Germany 2002), the only difference would be that Ash and his friends would remember Mewtwo and the Clone Pokémon.

2. Certain Pokémon released by Ash after being in his possession in the first place could have been cloned, so the cloned ones would be released in the wilderness while their original counterparts remained in Ash's possession - or vice versa. At least, in the case of Ash's Greninja, it could have been handled this way in the case. Thus, Ash could have summon Mewtwo to himself and ask him following favor: "Could you clone my Greninja" and Mewtwo would have responsed: "Of course, I'm deeply indebted to you because you have opened my eyes on New Island back then and saved me from Giovanni on the Mount Quena. Anytime, I'm ready coming to you in order to lend you a hand".

Ash's signature Pokémon par excellence.

Hence, there wouldn't have been any need for Ash releasing his Greninja and instead, its cloned would have gone to the wilderness in order to eradicate the last leftovers of Team Flare.

3. In terms of the current episodes (i.e. the Pokémon Journeys arc having been aired since 2019/11/17), Ash would have let his newest companion Goh that he had also seen a Mew before because Goh aspires catching Mew so badly. Therefore, sooner or later, Ash and Goh would have met that Mew from the first Pokémon movie and Mew would like to let Goh to catching him, according to the motto: "Every friend of Ash is my friend either". Then, Goh would also wanna catch a Mewtwo and that Mewtwo from the first Pokémon movie would breed many Mewtwo and one of them could be caught by Goh. Thus, Goh would have advanced towards his goal catching EVERY Pokémon from the world in a large way.


Conclusion: Although the entire anime story line would have remained the same in principle but it would surely have had a decisive impact if Ash and the others had kept their memories concerning the events of the movie Pokémon - Mewtwo Strikes Back (and the remake Mewtwo Strikes Back EVOLUTION, respectively). I've just gotten the differences above.

P.S.: The Pokémon movies (with exception of three movies mentioned above) are canon due to the references in the anime series.
For instance, Ash and his friends meet a Baby Lugia (being called Silver) and a Mommy Lugia during the adventures in the Johto region. The former stated that he has met a Lugia on the Orange Archipelago which is a reference to Pokémon the Movie 2000 - The Power of One - that movie where a Lugia appears and which was released in Japan 1999 and in the US as well as in Germany in the year 2000.

Was wäre, wenn…: Mewtu in "Pokémon - Mewtwo Strikes Back" NICHT die Erinnerungen von Ash und den anderen gelöscht hätte?

Der 1998 in Japan, 1999 in den USA und 2000 in Deutschland erschienene Film Pokémon The Movie - Mewtwo Strikes Back (deutscher Titel: Pokémon der Film - Mewtu gegen Mew) gehört, seit meiner Kindheit, zu meinen absoluten Lieblingsfilmen und den feiere ich bis heute immer noch. Und das nicht nur aus dem Grund, weil Mewtu mein absolutes Lieblings-Pokémon ist, sondern auch wegen der tiefgründigen Handlung. Auch den 2019 in Japan (und 2020 im Übersee) erschienene 3D-CGI-Remake Mewtwo Strikes Back EVOLUTION habe ich so richtig gefeiert, Nostalgie und Moderne zur selben Zeit vereint!

Aber wie dem auch sei, am Ende des Films löscht ja Mewtu von Ash, seinen Freunden und allen Beteiligten die Erinnerungen bezüglich der Eregnisse des Films, weil er dachte, dass dies besser so wäre.
Da die Pokémon-Filme (mit Ausnahme von Pokémon der Film - Ich Wähle Dich, Pokémon der Film - Die Macht in Uns sowie der kommende Film Pokémon der Film - Coco) ebenfalls zum Hauptanime-Kanon gehören, stellt sich die berechtige Frage, wie der weitere Verlauf vonstatten gegangen wäre, denn Mewtu nicht die Erinnerungen von Ash und den anderen, die bei den Ereignissen von Mewtwo Strikes Back dabei waren.

Vor diesem Hintergrund lautet die Fragestellung dieses Artikels: Hätte es irgendwelche signifikante Auswirkungen auf die gesamte Storyline gehabt? Oder wäre es nahezu gleich geblieben?

Ohne groß rumzuschnacken, fangen wir jetzt an:

Die Fortsetzung Mewtu kehrt zurück.
Oder wie er im Japanischen heißt:
MEWTWO SAGA - Mewtu! Hier bin ich.

1. Ash und seine Freunde wären tatsächlich mit mehr Weisheit herausgekommen, als sie vorher hatten und hätten es als eine Ehre angesehen, dass alle Pokémon-Exemplare - ob echt oder geklont - auf ihre eigene Art und Weise perfekt sind, so wie sind. Sogar Team Rocket hätte vieles daraus mitgenommen, selbst wenn diese eher im Hintergrund auftraten.
Und für Professor Eich wäre es ebenfalls interessant gewesen, wenn er von Mew, Mewtwo und den Klon-Pokémon gehört hätte, denn er hätte ebenfalls eine Menge dazu zu erzählen gehabt.

Und so oder so hätte der Team Rocket Boss Giovanni nichts unversucht gelassen, Mewtu zu fangen und unter seiner Kontrolle zu bringen. Also im Grunde genommen die Ereignisse aus der Fortsetzung Pokémon - Mewtwo Kehrt Zurück (erschienen 2000 in Japan, 2001 in den USA und 2002 in Deutschland), nur mit dem Unterschied, dass sich Ash und seine Freunde an Mewtu und den Klon-Pokémon erinnert hätten.

2. Einige Pokémon, die Ash freigelassen hatte, hätte er auch von Mewtu klonen lassen können, sodass nur die Klone in die Wildnis zurückkehren und ihre jeweiligen Originalen bei Ash geblieben wären - oder auch anders herum. Zumindest hätte man es bei Ashs Quajutsu so handhaben können, dass Ash dann - mit was auch immer - Mewtu zu sich ruft und darum bittet: "Könntest du mein Quajutsu bitte klonen?" und Mewtu so: "Na klar, ich stehe in deiner Schuld, weil du mir damals auf New Island die Augen geöffnet hattest und mich auf dem Berg Quena vor Giovanni gerettet hast. Für dich komme ich jederzeit wieder, um dir zur Hand zu gehen."

Gebt es ruhig zu: Ihr habt ebenfalls kein Verständnis dafür, dass Ash
 sich entschied, sein Quajutsu freizulassen. Denn es war sein
Signatur-Pokémon schlechthin.

Dann hätte Ash sein Quajutsu nicht freilassen müssen, sondern dann hätte dessen Klon in die Wildnis gehen können, um die letzten Überreste von Team Flare zu beseitigen.

3. Was die jetzigen Folgen (d.h. der Pokémon Journeys-Arc, der seit dem 17.11.2019 läuft) anbelangt, so hätte dann Ash seinem neuesten Begleiter Goh darüber in Kenntnis setzen können, dass er mal ein Mew gesehen, welches Goh unbedingt fangen will. Dann wären sie früher oder später auf Mew getroffen und Mew hätte sich gerne von Goh fangen lassen, gemäß der Devise: "Alle Freunde von Ash sind natürlich auch meine Freunde". Und danach würde Goh sogar ein Mewtu fangen wollen und Mewtu würde dann mehrere Mewtu züchten und eines davon würde dann von Goh gefangen werden. Dann wäre Goh somit seinem Ziel, ALLE Pokémon auf der Welt zu fangen, einen großen Schritt näher gekommen.


Fazit: Obwohl die gesamte Anime-Storyline im Grunde genommen dieselbe geblieben wäre, hätte es schon einen entscheidenden Einfluss gehabt, wenn Ash und die anderen die Erinnerungen bezüglich der Ereignisse des Film Pokémon - Mewtwo Strikes Back (bzw. den Remake Mewtwo Strikes Back EVOLUTION) behalten hätten. Die Unterscheide habe ich soeben oben ausgeführt.

Und nun würde mich mal interessieren, was ihr dazu denkt: Findet ihr es besser so, wie der erste Pokémon-Film geendet ist? Oder hättet ihr euch ein anderes Ende gewünscht? Schreibt es ruhig gerne in die Kommentare.

PS: Dass die Pokémon-Filme (mit den oben erwähnten Ausnahmen) zum Kanon gehören, merkt man an den Querverweisen innerhalb der Anime-Serie.
Beispielsweise während der Abenteuer in der Johto-Region, als Ash und seine Freunde ein Baby-Lugia (das auf den Namen Silber hört) und ein Mama-Lugia begegnen. Erstgenannter sagt, dass er schon mal ein Lugia auf den Orange-Inseln gesehen was, was ein Querverweis auf den Film Pokémon 2 - Die Macht des Einzelnen ist - jener Film, worin auch ein Lugia auftaucht und der 1999 in Japan und im Jahre 2000 in den USA sowie in Deutschland rauskam.
