Why Purple Kecleon (from Episode 207) hadn't been furthermore utilizied?! |
It cannot have escaped your notice that there are some things in the entire Pokémon-Franchise on which you can only do a face palm and think: "Have they lost their marbles?" And I ain't referring to plot holes, bagatelles or the like but I'm referring to sensible things, on the one hand, lots of high-value but unfortunately wasted potential and on the other hand, you've got the impression that they wanna avoid the elephant in the room.
Don't get me wrong: I've honestly loved the Pokémon-franchise since my childhood and I still love it. But even my humble self cannot deny the absurdity of the things whom I'm gonna elaborate in this article. However, I won't elaborate, for instance, that the games Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield as well as Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet feel like one step forward, two steps back. What I'm gonna elaborate are things most people talk about too rarely.
Well then, in the following, I'm gonna amplify three of these things and present simultaneously potential solutions or at least solution approaches. Here we go:
Official artwork from Purple Kecleon for Pokémon Mystery Dungeon |
1. I suppose, you also know the Purple Kecleon, don't you? It made his debut in Episode 207 The Kecleon Caper of the Pokémon-Anime. Another appearance was in the spin-off games Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Team Blue (for NDS) & Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Team Red (for GBA) having been released 2005 as well as in the Switch remake Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX (2020) but even there, it's nothing but a NPC.
But neither this is the Shiny version nor it has been utilized in the core games. Not even a Pokémon Card from the Purple Kecleon has ever been released.
The real Shiny version of Kecleon is not that exciting. The purple one is so much better, isn't it? |
Let's face it: The purple color looks really magnificent, thus, it's a shame that the real Shiny version of Kecleon diffentiate itself from the normal version by the zigzags pattern's color being blue (instead of red) - and that's it. So, why the purple Kecleon hadn't be implemented as Shiny version?
In other words, the Purple Kecleon is a manifestation of wasted potential which had a promising future. Therefore, it was a disastrous failure to practically discard this design. Insofar, the justified question is: Why did they create the Purple Kecleon in the first place?!
Enclosed, here're a few ideas of mine how we could be recompensed in regard of this disappointment:
- A TCG-card from the purple Kecleon or at least a Kecleon-card on which the purple one is displayed too
- Raid with the purple Kecleon in Pokémon GO (and hatching from a 5-km-egg as well) instead of randomly spawning at a PokéStop, as normal Kecleon do.
- Kecleon itself as playable character in a Super Smash Bros.-game and the purple version should be implemented as alternative skin
- the purple Kecleon as Event-Pokémon in a game from the core series.
Is that too much to ask for? I don't think so, since it would be a win-win-situation, if at least one of these ideas were applied.
Baby-Nidoqueen und Baby-Rihorn. Kawaii. |
2. Have you noticed that Nidorina and Nidoqueen are both in the egg group Undiscoverd (タマゴ未発見、Tamago mihakken, freely translated as: Undiscovered Eggs) and therefore cannot breed? However, their respective male counterparts Nidorino and Nidoking, as well as their pre-evolution Nidoran♀ and its male counterpart Nidoran♂, are able to do so. Paradoxal, huh?
It's comprehensible why the Legendary Pokémon, Mythical Pokémon, Ultra Beasts, Paradox-Pokémon, Baby Pokémon and Unown belong to the egg group Undiscovered, but why Nidoria and Nidoqueen belong to this egg group too?
However, in the anime, Nidorina and Nidoqueen are able to breed - unlike in the games:
In the movie Mewtwo Returns (the sequel from the movie Pokémon the Movie - Mewtwo Strikes Back), the Clone-Nidoqueen and the Clone-Rhyhorn have babies and some of the offsprings are Baby-Nidoqueen (instead of Nidoran♀but it doesn't matter). Regardless of this fact that the mother was a cloned one, Nidoqueen are generally able to breed in the anime.
Of course, here's once again the highlighted sentence in the Japanese writing: 「ニドラン♀の進化形だが、ニドリーナに なると、卵を産む能力はなくなる。」 |
As for the question why Nidorina and hence, Nidoqueen ain't able to breed, there was only ONE explanation by official entities which can be found in the guide book Pocket Monsters Encyclopedia (ポケットモンスター図鑑 , Poketto Monsutā Zukan) having been produced by Nintendo's affiliate Creatures, Inc. and been published by the publisher Famitsu (ファミ通).
After I got to know that this book is really a thing, I was able to find a scan in the internet. Therefore, I can show you that page wherein the reason for Nidorina's inability to breed is written (see left).
The sentence "Nidoran♀ no shinka-kei da ga, Nidorīna ni naru to, tamago wo umu nōryoku wa nakunaru" being highlighted in blue by myself translates as: "It is the evolved form from Nidoran♀, but upon becoming Nidorina, it loses its ability to lay eggs."
But as priorly expounded the anime shows otherwise and thus, it contradicts what's stated in this guidebook. As we know, everything what happens in the Pokémon movies is canon as well. Thus, a retcon in the core game series as well as a revision of the guidebook are required. With this in mind, only a patch can improve the present games to the extent that Nidorina and Nidoqueen don't belong to the egg group Undiscovered anymore but to the egg groups Monster (怪獣 , kaijū) and Field (陸上 , rikujō), i.e. to the same egg groups like their respective male counterparts as well as the entire Rhyhorn-evolution line. This would make them able to breed.
Official artwork of Ash-Greninja (サトシゲッコウガ、Satoshi Gekkouga) |
3. Why Ash-Greninja hadn't been implemented as Event-Pokémon? Only by transferring it from the demo version of Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon to one of these games' full versions, you could get that Greninja exemplar which can turn into Ash-Greninja by the Ability Battle Bond (絆変化 Kizuna henge, literal meaning: Bond Transformation). And then, you can transfer it into Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon and not directly from the previously mentioned demo versions.
Regardless the fact that Ash-Greninja had been considered as anime-only transformation, a cleverer idea would be the inclusion of Greninja with the Ability Battle Bond as Event-Pokémon or as a Pokémon with a Hidden Ability which can only be acquired under special circumstances (analogues to the Dream World from the versions of the 5th Generation).
The Ash-Greninja-Form has been heretofore considered as a transformation being on par with the Mega Evolution in terms of power.
This form ain't called Ash-Greninja for no reason. |
Alternatively, Ash-Greninja could also be implemented as standalone exemplar in Pokémon GO - whether as Quest Pokémon or as EX-Raid-Pokémon. Either way, it should be able to be transferred to Pokémon Home.
In short, more possibilities to get a Greninja with the ability Battle Bond for the core game series should be intergrated.
In short, more possibilities to get a Greninja with the ability Battle Bond for the core game series should be intergrated.
All in all, these three things have a representative character in terms of wasted potential in the Pokémon franchise. Indeed, they've failed on these three things and it makes you think: "What's the point of that?". Even a great Pokémon fan like me had to speak this out. But don't worry, it's not too late setting these three things straight. So, let us summarize the solution approaches:
A fan-made Pokémon card displaying the purple one too - made by myself. |
- The purple Kecleon should be furthermore utilized as it has deserved; whether as Event-Pokémon in the core games; as card of the TCG; as alternative skin for Kecleon as playable SSB-character or as EX-Raid-Pokémon in Pokémon GO - more or less as compensation for the careless dealings with this color design.
- As for Nidorina and Nidoqueen, a patch for the current Pokémon-games in order to alter these to the extent that Nidorina and Nidoqueen shall no longer belong to the egg group Undiscovered anymore and thereby are able to breed by putting them into the egg groups Monster and Field (as their respective male counterparts). Actually, they should've fixed it at the latest in the games of the 3rd generation but it's still not too late doing so.
- More opportunities to get Ash-Greninja should be available, e.g. events wherein you can get a Greninja with the ability Battle Bond or Ash-Greninja as standalone exemplar in Pokémon GO. Of course, it should be transferable to Pokémon Home as well.
