Poliwhirl and Pikachu. While seeing images like this, your nostalgic longing is awakened, ain't it?! |
The N64 games Pokémon Stadium as well as Pokémon Stadium 2 are two of my favorite retro games. This game series is one of my favorites among the Pokémon spin-off-games as well. Verily, Pokémon Stadium had set new standards in terms of the battle simulation genre which ain't be confused with the beat'em up genre. I still love this game even today. Therefore, guess what, I would be delighted if the Pokémon Stadium game series got another sequel. Since there's New Pokémon Snap (2021) for the Switch, it'd be worth it as well releasing a New Pokémon Stadium.
In the following, I'm gonna elaborate
- which Pokémon shall be implemented in the potential sequel (since it wouldn't be applicable to implement literally ALL Pokémon, plus the regional variants of some Pokémon, for technical reasons),
- which features could be added, or else, which features having been already there to begin with might be improved
- and last but not least, how to deal with the compatibility with the Pokémon core games.
Without further ado, lets get started:
First of all, all Pokémon from the first two generations, the evolutions and pre-evolutions having been added at the earlest in the 3rd generation of some of said Pokémon (i.e. adding, for instance, Electivire, Gliscor, Wynaut and Azurill) as well as the regional variants of some Pokémon and their evolutions (i.e. adding, for example, Alolan Raichu but also, for instance, Galarian Farfetch'd + Sirfetch'd and Hisuian Sneasel + Sneasler) .
Nevertheless, of course, not only the abilities (特性 , tokusei, literal meaning: characteristic) etc. but also the game mechanics Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, Dynamax + Gigantamax and the Terastal phenomenon shall be included.
Same goes for the various battle modes: Single Battles, Double Battles, Triple Battles, Rotation Battles and Sky Battles.
As for the gameplay, following features should be added, or else, which features having been already there to begin with might be improved:
- improved graphic based on the newest engine
- fixed bugs and glitches
- improved immediate processing, concerning the attacks and associated movements
- The battles might be improved to the extent they're more similar to the way being displayed in the anime.
As for the Gym Leader Castle (ジムリーダーの城 , jimu rīdā no shiro), it should be based on that from Pokémon Stadium 2 but with the difference that the Team Rocket Boss Giovanni (サカキ , Sakaki) can be battled as well.
Customization options might be implemented either: Players could have the ability to customize their trainer's appearance, choose from different outfits and create also custom arenas to create a unique experience. As for custom arenas, this should be inspired by the Super Smash Bros. game series wherein you can create custom stages.
Of course, transferring the Pokémon from Pokémon Home to New Pokémon Stadium and using them in battle is a good idea as well. Vice-versa, the Pokémon should be transferable from New Pokémon Stadium game to Pokémon HOME as well. Basically, the same way as it was with Pokémon Stadium and Pokémon Stadium 2 but with the decisive difference that it shall be effected by the means of Pokémon Home.
One of the best modes ever: VS. Mewtwo (in Japanese: ミュウツーを倒せ , Myūtsū wo taose , literal meaning: Defeat Mewtwo) |
Definitely, the VS. Mewtwo should return and improved to the extent that final boss Mewtwo is able to speak, as in the movie Pokémon the Movie - Mewtwo Strikes Back (1998) as well as in the CGI remake Mewtwo Strikes Back - Evolution (2019). Needless to say this would bring the game experience to a whole new level.
With that in mind, in the Japanese version of New Pokémon Stadium, Masachika Ichimura (市村正親) should lend Mewtwo his voice once again; as for the English version, Mewtwo should be dubbed by Dan Green and for the German version, either Frank Muth (who dubbed Mewtwo in the first movie as well as in Mewtwo Returns) or Martin Bonvinci (who dubbed Mewtwo in the CGI remake Mewtwo Strikes Back EVOLUTION) should be hired as the German voice of Mewtwo.
Further major changes in New Pokémon Stadium, they should be as follows:
- extension and improvement for the multiplayer features
- the Stadium Mode (スタジアム様式 , sutajiamu yōshiki, literal meaning: Stadium Style) should consists of FIVE cups with respectively four battles and NOT eight.
- abolition of the mode Battle Now! (Japanese denotation of this mode: とにかくバトルしたい! , Tonikaku batoru shitai! , freely translated as: Anyways, I wanna battle!) cuz let us be honest; it was really superfluous.
- Adding as well as replacements of the mini games in the mode Kids Club (チビッコクラブ, chibikko kurabu, literal meaning, toddler club).
- Tournament based on those in the anime
Maxwell Powers is very famous. He has also dubbed e.g. the Drone Rotom in the Japanese dub of the Pokémon anime. |
For the German version of New Pokémon Stadium, the voice actor Michael Bauer might be chosen as announcer. He's, for instance, known as the German voice of Daisuke's Digimon partner V-Mon from the Digimon Adventure series and moreover, he's been the German station voice of the TV channel Nickelodeon since 2005. So, he isn't an unknown quantity either.
All in all, a potential New Pokémon Stadium would be really worth it. At the latest since the release of the Switch game New Pokémon Stadium, there ain't no excuses anymore.
